Last night it struck me that in the midst of all the events of the last few days, I missed that Wednesday was Benjamin's two year anniversary.
Two years of living and thriving in spite of juvenile diabetes!
Oh Yah! Healthy & STRONG!
Benjamin,
You are one of the biggest joys of my life.
You have made caring for your diabetes as easy as it could possibly be.
You know all the steps needed to check your own blood sugar.
(You struggle with using the lancet, and you can't interpret the result, but you understand it, as a concept.)
You know the word diabetes now. You understand that you have it and Joseph doesn't.
You always say "That is for when I am sick" when you see apple juice.
(We use it when you are low).
You sometimes tell me that you need a "snack" when you feel a low.
Now that you are verbal you sometimes say "I don't want a poke" but you hardly ever fight me. Often you don't even seem to notice you are getting a shot.
Your "favorite" spot for a shot is in your arm. You hate your thighs being injected, so right now we usually avoid them.
You are growing just like your doctor wants you to. Your numbers are where we want them to be.
I pray that will always be true.
We get asked often about if we will put you on a pump, but after talking with your wonderful doctor, we still believe insulin injections are the best choice for you right now. You have two shots of Lantus a day and a shot of Humalog every time you eat. You are still so sensitive to the insulin that we dilute it so we can get the precise amounts we need.
We visit your endocrinologist every 3 months. The entire staff treats you like royalty when you are there! You always leave with stickers for you and your brother.
The worst diabetes moment of the year was having to do your annual blood draw. If that is the worst, we are so blessed!
I pray often that God would allow you to keep a positive attitude about diabetes being a part of your life, that you will learn how to and then take good care of your health as you grow in independence, and that there would be a cure someday!
Benjamin, We survived two years, baby!

You are such a great momma! He is thriving because of God's great grace and because of your loving care for him. He is privileged to have you for his mommy!
You do such a good job of keeping him healthy. Learning the good habits now will help him to know how to take care of himself when hes older. So glad hes doing so well!
