Benjamin & Joseph, You Both . . .
Find me and give me hugs every morning when you wake up.
Usually go to bed between 8:30-9:00 and are up between 6:30-7:30. We have you take a short rest time in the afternoon, but you rarely sleep. That time is spent instead listening to Odyssey stories, "reading" through stacks of picture books, or playing a small game of "guys" (Batman, Star Wars, Lego guys, etc.) in your bed quietly.
Will be starting kindergarten in the fall. You seem to be excited, but at the same time don't really understand what it all means.
Love to watch Wild Kratts. By far, it is your favorite show on TV. It is rare we miss it in an afternoon. Because of the show you have a huge interest in and knowledge of animals.
Love being read to. We can sit for hours with stacks of books. We read every night before bed. This past year you have started enjoying chapter books. We have read through many E.B. White books, some Beverly Cleary, a Box Car Children, and a few Magic Tree House books. Your favorite so far has been "Ribsey" by Beverly Cleary. You also enjoy "real life" books... biographies (on a child's level), history, and science.
Are very active. You wrestle, bounce, and run, and love to go to parks.
Are learning so much about God and His Word. You love to hear Bible stories, and you ask many good questions. We can almost see your minds working to understand and put it all together. It is our prayer that you soon understand that Jesus' death was for you!
Can climb up very tall fireman poles.
Love to swim. This year you took swim lessons and just really took off with it. Diving rings are a favorite. You both can front and back float. You love to jump and be thrown. Joseph, you are just about a full-fledged swimmer.
Were in T-ball this year and loved it. Often you and Daddy play ball in our back yard. Benjamin, you especially are very attentive to where that ball is at and the rules of the game.
Have started to take an interest in watching sports on TV with Dad and are beginning to understand the rules. In any game you see, in any sport, you want to know what team Dad is rooting for. Even if Dad says, "I don't really have a preference," you will pick a team and root for them!
Love to play imagination through dress up or Batman/Star Wars guys. You also love to take care of your stuffed animals and pretend they are your children. Mom and dad are the grandparents (or, occasionally the great-grandparents [not sure why?]) to the animals.
Play a video game called "Pikmin" with Daddy, 3-4 days a weeks for 15 minutes or so, and think it is the best thing ever (for the record, you watch Dad play and this is the only video game/computer game time we allow you to have yet).
Like to build and are starting to get pretty into Legos.
Are best friends who occasionally fight. You have really changed this past year in your communication and often chat about things you enjoy and you plan out what you are going to play or do.
Benjamin, You . . .
Weight 40lbs and are 43 1/2 inches tall.
You wear 5T clothes and size 11 shoes.
Lost your first tooth (a bottom one) last month.
Love to be told stories. Anything is great, but you especially like stories about real people and events.
Want to know the rules and the "right" way to do things. You very much want to do things for yourself.
Love babies.
Also love animals, but are cautious.
Are a fabulous climber. You have little fear and climb to the top of all play sets or rope structures.
Are always very sensitive to the needs and emotions of others. If Joseph is hurt, you make sure I know and take care of him. If you hear a baby crying at the store, you want reassurance that someone is taking care of him/her.
Are not too big on coloring, but you love to draw maps ("line drawings" as you call them). You also just really like to look at maps.
Ride your scooter often and very much enjoy it. We made some effort toward learning to ride a bike without training wheels this summer, but you don't have it mastered yet.
Still sleep with your blankies. You have a large pile of them every night, but the Winnie-the-Pooh one is your favorite still. You also have "Giraffe," "Little Bumpy" (a puppy), "Bark Bark Teddy Roosevelt" (a dog), and "Trixie" (a dolphin that sleeps in a large red mixing bowl in your bed each night) -- your stuffed animals that you love.
Are a fantastic eater and there is very little you don't like. I think your favorite is a homemade stuffed soft taco with meat/lettuce/beans/corn/cheese/salsa. You actually are picky about types of cheese and are not a big fan of milk, but that's all I can think of you don't like. You eat broccoli like a champ.
Have learned to identify your highs and lows about 80% of the time. A few months ago you actually woke me up during the night when you were low. You are starting to learn and understand the definitions and terminologies we use. You can check your own blood sugar (with prompting), but we still need to interpret results. Right now we have chosen to keep you on insulin injections rather than a pump.
Joseph, You . . .
Weigh 46 lbs and are 46 inches tall.
Wear size 5-6 (small boys) clothing and size 12 shoes.
Have lost 3 bottom teeth since Christmas.
Love numbers and math. We have really taught you very little, but you just seem to get numbers. You can count to hundreds by ones, twos, five, and tens. You can count all of those backwards as well. You can almost count by threes. You get the idea/concept of groups and multiplication and division (though you would not understand that terminology). For example, the other day you asked how many minutes it was until we arrived somewhere. I told you 50 and you asked me what 50 times 60 was because you wanted to know the number of seconds.
Have clothing preferences. You strongly favor patterns and color and very much dislike your plain khaki shorts -- not because they are uncomfortable, but because they are "ugly."
Are more cautious about riding bikes and scooters.
Just got glasses. You were very decisive about needing the camouflage pair and have not put up any fuss about wearing them. You have 20/20 vision in your right eye, but your left eye needs a pretty large adjustment.
Sleep with your lovies (the "boy" and two "girls") every night still. You also have your favorite animals, "Gizmo" (the gremlin), "Little Love" (a tiny Lion with a bonnet) and "Little D" (the koala).
Love to play games. Chutes-n-Ladders, Go Fish, etc. You can never find someone willing to play as many times or as long as you would like to.
Are nervous around animals.
Are a somewhat picky eater. You do a great job with fruit and veggies, but meat is hard for you. You love all forms of dairy. Swiss cheese is a favorite for you. You like noodles and are particular toward one brand of ranch (Aldi low fat). You also love blueberries and cantaloupe and cherries quite a bit.
You like to use random craft supplies to create "gifts" for your animals.
